How Far Will Torque Really Go? The Honest Answer

One of the questions I’m asked most often is simple: “What’s the range on an eMTB?”

The truthful answer is the same as asking how many miles you’ll get from a tank of diesel. It depends.

For me, the bike in question is Torque — my Scott Aspect eRIDE 910, powered by Bosch’s Performance Line CX motor and a 600Wh battery. I weigh around 95kg, carry a few essentials, and spend most of my time exploring the gravel fire roads and forest trails of Cannock Chase rather than smooth tarmac.

The figure I use for planning

After plenty of rides, I’ve settled on one figure: 30 miles.

Could I ride further? Absolutely. Could I ride less? Definitely.

On a cool, dry day with hard-packed gravel, sensible tyre pressures and a steady cadence, Torque could probably stretch towards 35 to 40 miles. But real rides involve climbs, loose surfaces, stops, photographs, hard accelerations and those irresistible little tracks that make you think, “I’ll just see where this goes.”

Why eMTB mode suits Cannock Chase

Bosch eMTB mode is remarkably clever. Instead of giving one fixed level of assistance, it constantly adjusts the power according to how hard I pedal. Push harder and Torque responds instantly. Ease off and the assistance drops away smoothly.

For Cannock Chase, that is almost perfect. Long forest roads become effortless, loose gravel climbs become enjoyable challenges, and the steeper sections stop looking like obstacles and start looking like invitations.

My realistic range

With me at 95kg, riding mainly gravel and forestry trails in eMTB mode, I would expect around 25 to 35 miles from a full charge. For a normal Cannock Chase ride, 30 miles is the sensible planning figure, with a little reserve left rather than arriving home on fumes and optimism.

Flat, dry and firm gravel may push the range higher. Mud, cold weather, low tyre pressure, steep climbs and frequent hard acceleration can pull it down into the low twenties.

Stretching the day with a charger

A fast charger adds another possibility. Ride to a café or country pub, ask politely to plug in, enjoy lunch and a pint, then leave with a useful top-up for the afternoon. A normal stop can turn a 30-mile ride into something far more ambitious without carrying a spare battery.

That is very much the Nix way of looking at things. The destination matters. The photographs matter. The stories matter. The battery is simply what allows those stories to keep unfolding.

So, how far will Torque go?

On paper, the answer is a range estimate. In reality, it is far enough to turn an ordinary ride into another unforgettable chapter in the Nix story.
