How I Keep Vanilla’s Power Civilised, Predictable, and Battery-Friendly

Every good system has three characters. Not more. Not fewer. Three is the sweet spot — enough redundancy to be resilient, not so much complexity that things start arguing with each other.

In my campervan, the NIX Battery Top-Up Strategy is built around three major players, each with a very clear job description. Nobody overlaps. Nobody freelances. Everybody behaves.

Player One: The Energy Reservoir

Jackery Explorer 2000 v2

The Jackery is not the leisure battery. That distinction matters.

Its role in the NIX system is simple and noble:store energy patiently, then release it cleanly and politely when asked.

Jackery’s Job

  • Acts as a mobile, silent EHU

  • Buffers energy from driving, solar, or mains

  • Supplies stable 230 V AC, not raw DC chaos

  • Never talks directly to the leisure battery

In NIX terms, the Jackery is the grid.It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t panic. It just sits there, full of electrons, waiting to be useful.

Crucially, the Jackery is not used to smash power straight into the Exide. That would be crude. Instead, it hands responsibility downstream to someone better qualified.

Which brings us to the second player.

Player Two: The Governor

Victron Energy Blue Smart IP65 12/10

If the Jackery is the grid, the Victron is the civil service.

This is the part of the system that understands batteries, chemistry, patience, and restraint. Its entire purpose is to stop enthusiasm turning into damage.

Victron’s Job

  • Accept clean 230 V AC from the Jackery

  • Convert it into correct, battery-safe DC

  • Apply a 7-stage AGM charging profile

  • Limit current to 10 A (0.1C) — the sweet spot

  • Decide when to bulk, absorb, float, or stop

The Victron does not care where the AC comes from.Campsite hook-up? Fine.Jackery Explorer 2000 v2? Also fine.

As far as the Victron is concerned, electricity is electricity — and it will enforce good manners regardless of the source.

In the NIX strategy, nothing reaches the leisure battery without passing through Victron. That rule is absolute.

Player Three: The Store of Record

Exide EZ850 100 Ah AGM

The Exide EZ850 is the battery that actually runs the van. Lights, fridge, heater, water pump — this is the battery that earns its keep.

And because it’s AGM, it expects to be treated like an adult.

Exide’s Job

  • Store 12 V energy reliably

  • Deliver current smoothly

  • Remain sealed, cool, and uncomplaining

  • Live a long, boring, drama-free life

The Exide does not want:

  • Sudden voltage swings

  • Over-aggressive charging

  • Random DC feeds from “clever” shortcuts

It wants slow, accurate, predictable charging — which is exactly what the Victron gives it when powered by the Jackery.

How the Strategy Actually Works (Real Life, Not Theory)

Here’s the NIX workflow, end to end:

  1. Use the van normallyFridge on, heater ticking, lights glowing. The Exide EZ850 does its thing.

  2. When the leisure battery dropsNot flat. Not abused. Just naturally used.

  3. Deploy the JackerySwitch on the Explorer 2000 v2. No engine. No hook-up. No noise.

  4. Victron takes controlThe IP65 12/10 sees clean AC and begins a proper AGM charge at 10 A.

  5. Battery reaches absorption, then floatNo guessing. No babysitting. Bluetooth confirms everything is calm.

  6. Jackery switches offOnce the Victron tapers and the Exide is happy, the job is done.

Nothing overheats. Nothing argues. Nothing gets stressed.

The Golden Rules of the NIX Strategy

These rules are locked in:

  • ❌ Jackery never connects directly to the Exide

  • ✅ Victron always sits in the middle

  • ✅ Charging current never exceeds 10 A

  • ✅ AGM settings only — no equalisation, ever

  • ✅ Top up early, not after abuse

This is battery stewardship, not power chasing.

Why This Strategy Works So Well

Because each player has one job:

  • Jackery stores and supplies energy

  • Victron manages and protects energy

  • Exide uses and holds energy

No overlap. No confusion.

Old-school electrical thinking taught us that batteries die young when they’re rushed, overheated, or mistreated. The NIX Battery Top-Up Strategy respects that wisdom — it just uses modern tools to execute it flawlessly.

The NIX Philosophy (Short, but Important)

This system isn’t about maximum amps. It’s about maximum calm.

When you open the Victron app and see:

  • 14.4 V absorption behaving nicely

  • Current tapering exactly as expected

  • The Exide EZ850 floating peacefully

You know the strategy is working.

The Jackery is the quiet muscle. The Victron is the brain. The Exide is the heart.

And in the NIX world, that balance is everything.
